Board and Train – Focused Training When Owner Participation Isn’t Possible

An Alternative Option for Unique Circumstances
While our training philosophy strongly emphasizes owner involvement and in-home learning, Balance Dog Training San Diego does offer a limited Board and Train program for clients who cannot commit to regular sessions. This program provides immersive, professional instruction in a controlled environment—but it is only recommended in specific situations where in-person participation is not feasible.
Board and Train can offer fast results, but it does not replace the bond-building and communication practice that come with owner-led training. We view this program as a secondary option—not a replacement for owner involvement.
What Is Board and Train?
In this program, your dog lives and trains with Dave for a set period. During their stay, your dog will receive structured obedience training daily, designed to address core issues and reinforce desired behavior.
Program focus includes:
- Sit, down, stay, and recall commands
- Leash walking and polite behavior
- Structured routines and calm behavior in new environments
- Behavior management for common problems like jumping, barking, and excessive energy
- Exposure to different situations to build confidence and focus
Training occurs multiple times per day, with rest, decompression, and integration between sessions. This immersion helps solidify routines quickly—but without follow-through at home, the results may fade.
Who Should Consider This Program?
Board and Train is ideal for:
- Owners with demanding schedules who cannot commit to weekly sessions
- Clients needing to prepare their dog for specific changes (new baby, travel, moving)
- Dogs with mild to moderate behavior issues that benefit from routine
- Individuals who need short-term professional assistance before continuing training at home
We do not recommend this option for severe aggression, separation anxiety, or dogs with unresolved trauma unless Dave has conducted a prior evaluation.
Why This Program is Offered Sparingly
Dave has trained hundreds of dogs and has consistently seen the most sustainable results when owners are active participants. Board and Train can create a short-term behavior improvement, but it often lacks the critical transfer of control to the owner once the dog returns home.

That’s why this program is only offered after consultation, and always with a follow-up transition session to support lasting change.
Transition and Follow-Up Training Included
All Board and Train programs include a structured hand-off session where Dave teaches you how to continue reinforcing the training at home. You will learn the commands, handling techniques, and correction methods used during the stay, so you can maintain consistency.

Follow-up sessions are available if additional coaching is needed after the return home.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does my dog stay?
Typical stays range from 2 to 3 weeks, depending on your goals and your dog’s needs. Program length is determined during your consultation.
Where will my dog stay?
Your dog will stay in a calm, structured environment under Dave’s direct care. This is not a kennel or large facility. Each dog receives individual attention.
Will my dog forget me or bond with the trainer?
Your dog will not forget you. While they may bond with the trainer during the stay, the goal is to transfer that structure back to you during the transition process.
Can I visit my dog during the program?
Visits are not typically recommended, as they can disrupt progress. However, updates and communication are provided regularly.
Request a Board and Train Evaluation
Board and Train is not a one-size-fits-all solution. It requires careful planning and follow-through. That’s why we only offer this option after evaluating your dog and your goals during a free consultation.
